FAQ

Q. What’s an apprenticeship exactly?

A. LAAP takes a similar approach to the age old concept of Apprenticeship in which an apprentice would come to live and train with the master craftsman/artist, thereby turning the entire time spent together into one cohesive study and training period, observing and assisting, and learning from the master craftsman/artist’s entire life.

Q. Why is an apprenticeship important?

A. Apprenticing is important because you go farther and deeper in your relationship with a teacher vs. taking a private lesson or a class at a school will ordinarily allow you to. By observing your mentor’s life in a greater capacity and experiencing first-hand the ways in which they achieve their artistic goals, you can then get a clearer sense of how you might want to apply a similar approach to your own art.  And it goes both ways, in an apprenticeship your teacher/s get to know you personally to a greater extent, thereby enabling them to understand who you are much better, and tailor the teaching to be as direct and personal to you as possible.

Q. Can I arrange for a phone/skype conversation or an in-person meeting with a faculty member before committing to enroll?

A. We very much encourage pre-enrollment dialog. Please contact us to schedule one in when you’re ready.

Q. Is there a minimum age for attending LAAP?

A. 18 and up. However, we have had minors attend LAAP before with parental consent. If you are under 18 and your parents/legal guardian are in support of you attending LAAP, we’re love to hear from you.

Q. What if I have food allergies ?

A. Please let us know in the registration form and we will gladly accommodate.

Q. Is there a certain minimum level I need to reach before attending LAAP?

A. Yes and no:

Drumming - These sessions utilize the drum-set as the primary instrument used in our studies. Even though we do accommodate a wide range of levels, this is not geared towards total beginners. Because we train for long stretches of time (5-8 hours per day), if you’ve never practiced for more than two (highly focused) hours in a day, most likely you are not yet ready for such intense training. However, sometimes we do get participants who are at a lower stage yet their hunger-level for improvement is so noticeably high, that we do include them. If you are not sure, please speak with us so we can help assess.

Aikido - Any level

Music Composition - Some previous experience required. If you are not sure, please speak with us so we can help assess.

Visual Arts - Any level

Q. Can LAAP come to my state/country to run an apprenticeship?

A. The short answer is yes! In order for LAAP to run an apprenticeship we would need to have a facility that can host the session. The particular type of facility would depend on what kind of an apprenticeship we would be running, and how many students would be participating. If this is something that you are seriously interested in exploring with us, please contact us to discuss further.

Q. Can I have a guest come and visit me during an apprenticeship?

A. In general we ask that during our full work days, there are no visiting guests so that our focus could be maintained. When we have apprenticeships that are longer than five full work days, and a break-day is scheduled in, that could be a good opportunity to invite a guest to come and visit.

Q. Are there any prep materials I can work on before attending an apprenticeship?

A. Depending on the particular apprenticeship, there may be prep materials that we would provide. If there are, we’ll get those to you once you have registered and your deposit has been processed.
